The Islamic University Students’ Union has asked the administration to scrap off late registration fees amid economic challenges facing parents and guardians due to the COVID-19 pandemic.
The Guild President Welunga Yusuf raised a concern yesterday during a meeting chaired by the Dean of Students (University Coordinator ) Dr Sulaiti Kabali.
Welunga said it is unfair for the students to be charged the late registration fees yet the parents and guardians are struggling to find the tuition and functional fees although the functional fee was reduced by 20 percent.
He says the administration must consider removing the late registration fee since the university recommended that the students pay 25 percent of the total fees (Functional and Tuition Fees) per month.
According to the payment, the late registration fee of 50,000 UGX starts on 30th August 2021 to 13th September 2021.
Recently, the Islamic University in Uganda reduced functional fees by 20 percent for the second semester of 2020/2021 academic year when students are studying online from their homes. The university also suspended accommodation fees until when schools reopen and the university has also removed the 60 percent policy that demands students to pay 60 percent of the fees to register for the semester.
According to a circular issued from the Academic Registrar’s Office, the Finance Committee of the university has accepted some changes in the IUIU fees structure to enable the university to run online classes.
Accommodation: Resident Local students are charged UGX 3,500/= per day and resident International Students be charged USD 1 per day for staying in the hostels when the lockdown is officially lifted. Be informed that the accommodation charges will be effective when the lockdown is fully lifted by the Government of Uganda and when students will be back on the Campus. The board had approved a 20 percent discount on functional fees. Therefore, students shall pay 80 percent of the Functional fees.
On the mode of payment, the circular said, students shall pay 25 percent of the total fees (Tuition and Functional Fees) per month, instead of the existing 60 percent requirement implying that students shall pay 75 percent of the total fees in the first three months, and the outstanding balance be paid before sitting for the end of semester examinations.
