Today, the Rector of the Islamic University in Uganda, Professor Ismail Simbwa Gyagenda has received the title of Honorary Professor from the Academic Union Oxford for his significant contribution to the development of national science and education.
The IUIU Rector accepted the title from the prestigious Academic Union Oxford from the United Kingdom. In his acceptance speech, Professor Gyagenda says will use the expertise in education to take IUIU to the greater heights.
The Rector who assumed office in January 2021 says he has plans to use the university’s farm in Jami village to boost IUIU’s revenue base with the help of the Turkish Government.
The Rector also says as advised by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC), IUIU will partner with universities that are found in the member countries of the OIC to continue serving Uganda and the entire world diligently.
The Islamic University in Uganda was opened in the year 1988 by the Organization of Islamic Cooperation (OIC) under a bilateral agreement between the Government of Uganda (GOU) and the OIC. In 1990, the Parliament of Uganda enacted a law, The Islamic University in Uganda Act (cap 131, Laws of Uganda), formally establishing the University in Uganda.
Meanwhile, IUIU has four campuses namely Main Campus in Mbale City, Kampala Campus in Kampala City, Arua Campus in Arua City and Females’ Campus in Wakiso Ditrsict.
