Kampala International University (KIU) are the winners of International Humanitarian Law Moot Court Competition 2021 organised by the International Committee of the Red Cross (ICRC) Uganda.
KIU has defeated the Islamic University in Uganda (IUIU) to emerge the winners.
Announcing the results today at Fairway Hotel in Kampala, the Regional Legal Advisor of ICRC Jamma Arman commended both teams for rebutting well and making their universities proud.
The adjudicators of the final were Justice Elizabeth Nahamya (Retired) Mr Elly Turwamubona (Chairman- General Court Martial Appeal) and Jemma Arman (Regional Legal Advisor of ICRC based in Nairobi, Kenya).
Justice Elizabeth Nahamya (Retired) commended the students for their prowess of International Humanitarian Law. She however, said the pandemic had an effect in the competition since the students were attending it virtually.
The winning team comprised of two students and will get UGX 300,000 cash each while IUIU team will get UGX 200,000 cash each during a ceremony that will be held on Friday, 24th September, 2021 at ICRC Uganda offices in Kampala. Both teams will be awarded with prizes for their universities. Outstanding individuals such as best speaker will be awarded during the ceremony.
Four universities namely Makerere University (MAK) Islamic University in Uganda, Kampala International University and Uganda Christian University (UCU) took part in the competition.
Yesterday, IUIU defeated UCU to reach the finals while KIU defeated MAK to reach the finals.
