Students at Kyambogo University, through the Guild leadership, have expressed strong opposition to the institution’s decision to increase tuition and other fees by up to 50%.
The grievances were formally communicated through a letter issued by the Guild President, Reagan Mwebesa, on July 23, 2024.
The letter, addressed to the student fraternity, highlighted that the fee increments were implemented without prior consultation or involvement of key stakeholders and student leaders.
This unilateral decision by the university management has led to widespread dissatisfaction among the student body.
In addition to the fee hike, the university has been criticized for the unjust closure of student portals, which has further exacerbated the situation. The students argue that these actions undermine their rights and disrupt their academic activities.
As a response to these measures, the Guild President has outlined a series of resolutions aimed at addressing the students’ concerns.
These include a call for a boycott of all lectures and university programs until the management reverses its decision. Furthermore, students who defy this collective stand are to be regarded as adversaries of the general student population and will face repercussions accordingly.
The Guild also urged students to remain in their hostels or homes to ensure their safety until the university premises are deemed safe and conducive for learning.
The situation remains tense as the students await a response from the university management regarding their demands.
