Makerere University’s 75th graduation ceremony kicked off today, 13th January 2025, at the Freedom Square.
With approximately 500 students set to receive first-class honors degrees across the five-day celebration, we delve into other statistics making this convocation outstanding.
The elite group of performers represents about 4.4% of the 11,455 undergraduate degree candidates.
Of the total 13,662 graduates, gender distribution shows a promising trend toward equity, with 7,299 (53.4%) female and 6,363 (46.6%) male graduates.
The undergraduate degree category, which comprises the majority at 83.8% of all graduates, demonstrates particularly strong female representation with 6,369 (55.6%) compared to 5,086 (44.4%) male graduates.
The postgraduate statistics reveal 143 PhD candidates (1.05% of total graduates), split between 79 male (55.2%) and 64 female (44.8%).
Master’s degrees account for 13.3% of graduates, with 1,045 male (57.6%) and 768 female (42.4%) recipients. Additionally, 243 postgraduate diplomas and 8 undergraduate diplomas will be awarded during the ceremony.
Leading the pack of outstanding achievers is Mr. Abdul Latif Umar Bagoole, who emerged as both the best overall student and the best in Humanities with an exceptional CGPA of 4.97 in the Bachelor of Leisure and Hospitality Management.
In the Sciences category, Mr. Mubiru Enock Joel distinguished himself with an impressive CGPA of 4.91 in the Bachelor of Science program.
The ceremony has began with graduates from four key colleges: the College of Education and External Studies (CEES), College of Computing and Information Sciences (CoCIS), College of Veterinary Medicine, Animal Resources and Bio-Security (CoVAB), and the School of Law (SoL).
The remaining colleges will follow in a carefully scheduled sequence through January 17th, 2025.
