Makerere University has officially announced a vacancy for the position of Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor.
The advertisement comes after months of public criticism regarding the leadership gap at Uganda’s premier university.
The Second Deputy Vice-Chancellor will hold a pivotal role in financial governance, institutional planning, and administrative leadership according to the job description published by the university.
The successful candidate will report directly to the Vice-Chancellor and oversee the finance and administration departments while implementing the university’s recurrent and capital budgets.
For over five years, Prof. Henry Alinaitwe has been serving as the Acting Deputy Vice-Chancellor for Finance and Administration, far exceeding the university’s own policy that limits acting positions to a period not exceeding one year.
Simultaneously, Prof. Buyinzika Mukadasi, the Academic Registrar, has been serving in an acting capacity as a Deputy Vice-Chancellor while maintaining his primary role.
This prolonged temporary arrangement has drawn increasing criticism from education stakeholders who have expressed concerns about administrative efficiency and governance structure at the institution.
The position carries a five-year tenure with the possibility of reappointment for another term.
Interested candidates have until Monday, 31th March 2025, to submit their applications either in hardcopy or electronic format to the search committee.
Applications can be submitted to the Secretary Search Committee at the Academic Registrar’s office or emailed to search-dvcs@mak.ac.ug before the deadline.
