MAKERERE GUILD RACE: THE FAVOURITES AND THE ‘JOKERS’

By Napoleon Tumukunde Nuwamanya

Makererians are stuck in another battle of choosing who to take the top sit in the student guild body. With many assumptions, misunderstandings and clashes with the political parties, and students, finally 8 candidates have been brought on the fontline line of the race as at the first week of the race, Aber Lillian from FDC, ASERU SARAH from UYD, MUSIIME PHILLIPE from NRM, Tabaaro Julius, Kumakech Sam from UPC, Bwowe Ivan, Nanyenya Nicholas and Kintu Eddy.

Aseru Sarah, a strong lady from Uganda Youth Democrats is enjoying overwhelming support from the ladies, Complex Hall, and School of Physiology students. These students are busy rocking Makerere university with “akadodi dance rhythm” while sipping on some ‘enguuli’.

Aber Lillian the diva from school of languages has garnered more support from the northerners and FDC students loyal to former president Adeke Anna. Essentially, Aber is still battling to gain full support from Andrews Mujinya’s (who was kicked out of the race on allegations of having retakes) strong supporters and other ladies on the campus.

Bwowe Ivan the university student lawyer as referred to many, has strong hold from the law students and by the end of last week, he was also gaining more grounds as result of Andrew Mujinya and Wanyama Ojambo’s dropping out of the race, thereby making him to be seen as the only strong man against two women in the race.

Musiime Phillip first stood as independent but later crossed to NRM after Mbabazi Boniface was dropped out of the race. There by gaining strong and increasing support from the movement students and human right students, but losing it by preaching that students should work with the government especially the president in order to develop and address their problems. He needs to have neutral ground and stop attacking the opposition to win the race.

The rest of the candidates;  Kabaro Julius (the God fearing man), Kumakech Samuel (the fighter), Nanyenya Nicholas (the doctor), and Kintu Eddy, all as independent candidates. Try as much as they can to build and make the race interesting with their preachings condemning the 60% tuition, and feeding policies by the university council but have no supporters to cheer them up making them not be seen as tough factors in the first week of the Makerere guild race.

However roughly two weeks to go, the students still expect more rallies, debates, and bands to rock the political season, Bwowe Ivan, Aseru Sarah, and Aber Lillian still have to consolidate the race.  And Musiime Phillip has room to prove himself that he is the hero and win Mujinya’s loyal supporters, the rest: have the task to work on the mobilization to win the race otherwise they’ll remain political jokers.

I still remain NAPOLEON TUMUKUNDE NUWAMANYA who is still observing the race to the 80th Makerere student guild top office.
