The 86th Makerere Students’ Guild Leadership has through the Guild Ministry of Health, implored the University Management to expedite the vaccination of all students at the university, as a matter of utmost urgency.
This petition delivered today, was in the form of a letter written by the Guild Minister of Health, Hon. Nelson Ssewanyana, to the Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabus Nawangwe.
This move comes in the wake of a declaration made by the Minister of Education, Hon. Janet Kataha Museveni, to the effect that schools, universities and other tertiary institutions will only safely reopen on vaccination of a significant number of students.
In the letter, Hon. Nelson Ssewanyana, the Guild Health Minister, contends that the University has been adversely affected by the raging pandemic, to the extent of bringing all academic business to a standstill.
Furthermore, that alive to the university management’s decision to recall online examinations and assessments due to inefficiency, the only viable option is to explore the possibility of physical resumption of studies by learners.
However, that viable option is not feasible without vaccination of all students, hence the urgency.
The Guild Minister further alluded to the press briefing by the Uganda Ministry of Health last week, that 45 million doses of the Johnson & Johnson and Sinopharm will arrive in the country in September and October respectively and that the University Management should reach out to government to prioritise university students when rolling out the attendant vaccination plan.
Ultimately, it was noted in the letter that the vaccination of the University staff and the medical students alone, will not suffice. That efforts should be geared towards the vaccination of all Makerere University Students, as a matter of urgency.
It should be recalled that earlier, Makerere University had released a new roadmap aimed at holding online examinations and assessments online. However that resolution did not see the light of day, owing to the absence of the requisite structural and infrastructural capacity to hold such examinations and assessments virtually.
