Yesterday, the 86th Makerere Student’s Guild Leadership held a meeting with the University Senate in a bid to forge a way forward in the resolution of the impasse that now defines the fate of the finalists and the continuing students at Makerere University.
By the time schools, universities and other tertiary institutions were closed, finalists had just finished their exams and the continuing students were scheduled to commence theirs on the subsequent Monday.
In the meeting, it was resolved firstly; that finalists who had completed their semester one examinations start semester two online. This was based on reports submitted by different College Administrators on their readiness to start semester two.
This will be implemented early next month. Secondly, that the University Administration pursues more robust negotiations with the Law Development Centre (LDC) so as to explore the possibility of another intake, preferably in January, considering that Law Finalists are unable to make it for the September intake, owing to the fact that they have another semester to cover.
Thirdly, it was resolved that since there were different modes of assessment suggested by the Student Leadership, among which, were take-home papers and open-book exams, multiple choice questions, portfolio, reflective journals, among others, College Academic Boards should undertake to adopt the most appropriate mode for them, from the many suggested.
Alive to the fact that many other universities are already having online classes but for Makerere University, it is hoped that the University Council will make haste in adopting these resolutions.
This in turn, is expected to expedite their implementation at the College level, or else, the future of the finalists and the continuing students at Makerere University would unfortunately and regrettably, continue to remain at a stand-still as the rest of the world progresses.
