NOT SAFE: The lecturers need guns to protect themselves from hoodlums because they live in ‘not wholly safe’ places yet they return home late.
As insecurity continues to ravage the university’s most sinister places, characterised by huge laptop thefts, house break into, campus murders and rape, Makerere’s nights and the era of terror attacks, We have learnt that university lecturers and officials are rushing to secure more guns to grouse up their security.
According to reliable sources that intimated to us and preferred anonymity, lecturers were feared to be in possession of guns at the varsity. Whereas the university’s entrances and exits are beefed by ‘Iraqi retirees’, Makerere dons fear for their lives and have asked the Inspectorate of Police to help them secure guns for personal protection.
In a letter that this newspaper has seen, a senior lecturer at the Department of Political science and Public Administration at Makerere University who in the letter was being introduced to the IGP, sought to acquire a gun for personal protection. The letter was signed by a top Army official from Senior Command and Staff College at Kimaka who recommended that the don receives the weapon to protect him from the hoodlums.
“This letter serves the purpose of introducing to you (IGP) the above lecturer ……… requests to be availed a fire arm for his personal protection. I am aware that where he currently resides is not wholly safe as many times due to work he has had to go home quite late, rendering him a vulnerable target for hoodlums,” reads part of the letter.
If the trend of insecurity in and around Makerere continues, more lecturers may apply for guns. Lecturers, just like students have been attacked by goons who steal and inflict dire injuries onto them. However, police records at the university police post indicate that more students have fallen victim to hoodlums compared to their lecturers.
What remains unclear is how many lecturers hold guns.
Students may also opt to have guns for self defence as they continue to be victims of rape, theft and murder. The recent case is that of ‘goons’, who attacked, raped and murdered one Peninnah Kobusingye late last month.
