The Guild leadership of Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST), has taken a step in assisting the Class Coordinators to communicate easily with their lecturers regarding the ongoing Online Lecturers. This is being done by providing airtime to Class leaders.
A huge burden has largely fallen on these class coordinators to mobilise their course mates for lectures and as well deliver information to students who fail to attend classes for various reasons. This was revealed by the Guild Minister of Education Hon. Karobwa Selassie through his communication to the Class Presidents’ Forum.
‘’We have rolled out a phased program to support our Class Presidents through provision of some airtime relief to aid them in conducting their tasks. We thought it wise to deal with Class Presidents because they are our immediate contacts between the students and lecturers. A portion of Class presidents received their relief yesterday, Sunday 25th July 2021, and we are still mobilizing more resources to reach out to all and possibly to continuously support them throughout’’ Hon. Karobwa explained.
According to statistics, MUST has more than 100 Class Presidents and they are obliged to organize their classes and ensure lectures are conducted and report students’ problems to the Guild or Administration.
MUST was among the first public universities to commence online studies amidst the ongoing covid-19 lockdown on universities inclusive and currently lectures are ongoing.
While speaking to the Guild President Ms. Mariam Iculet Arikosi, she affirmed that efforts are ongoing to ensure that students are supported in this challenging time with priority given to the neediest students being identified.
‘’Recorded lecture videos are being shared with different classes by Faculty Administrators. The challenges being faced by many of the classes can more easily be solved when closely working with Class Presidents especially in identifying and reaching out to the neediest students. It is through these Co-Ordinators that every students’ experience can be known.” she told Campus Bee
“I call upon every student in all their different capacities to be of assistance to their comrades. It could be as simple as reaching out to a student who is missing classes and sharing lecture material with them,”She concluded
