Today (Friday January 17th) marked the last day of the four-day Makerere University 70th graduation ceremony that started on Tuesday, January 14th. The first day of the ceremony was Presided over by the Prime Minister Dr. Ruhakana Rugunda who represented President Museveni as the chief guest.
Today’s ceremony was comprised of graduands from the College of Engineering, Design, Art and Technology, College of Humanities and Social Sciences, and the School of Law.
In his speech to the graduands, the Vice Chancellor Prof Barnabas Nawangwe urged them to remain humble and eager to learn. Nawangwe warned them against disrespecting people by virtue of their qualifications.
“As you leave the gates of Makerere University today with a new qualification, I pray that you will remain humble and eager to learn, especially from those who have gone before you. Do not ever disrespect anyone by virtue of their qualification. Some of the men and women that run today’s billion dollar industries did not complete their undergraduate degrees. However, they were wise enough to spot those who were capable of taking their dreams to the next level and recruit them.” Nawangwe advised.
The 70th graduation ceremony saw a total of 13,510 students conferred upon degrees and awarded diplomas of Makerere University in various disciplines. Of these, 62 received PhDs, 1,173 Masters Degrees and 119 Postgraduate Diplomas, while 12,156 got undergraduate diplomas and Bachelors Degrees.
