President Yoweri Kaguta Museveni officially reopened the iconic main administration building of Makerere University, also known as the Ivory Tower, after its restoration.
The building was severely damaged by fire on September 20, 2020, in what Vice-Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe described as “the saddest day in the history of Makerere University.”
President Museveni, joined by First Lady and Minister of Education and Sports, Janet Museveni, and other dignitaries, expressed his gratitude for the restoration, noting his relief upon learning that student records remained intact.
“All is well; we shall build another building,” the president assured when informed of the safety of the records.
President Museveni also shared personal memories of the Ivory Tower, where he participated in student debates during his time, offering a poignant connection to the university’s historical significance.
Prof. Nawangwe, who was present at the site during the fire, acknowledged the overwhelming loss, but also celebrated the restoration as a sign of Makerere’s enduring spirit.
