It’s a Friday night, and all you can see are expensive nice cars parked outside Nana hostel; being driven by mature men, with girls excitedly walking down the steps looking stunning ready for the night to be awesome. All I can think is WOW!

Surely living the life of a 21st Century University student is not easy; this goes mostly to the ladies. There is a lot to live up to, a way of life that one is supposed to abide by; from fashion, to technology, the type of friends you have and where one hangs out.

It is normal to want to fit in and have the new and latest stuff and as I analysed the pressures that come with being a university student, I discovered the easiest and quickest way to get what you want is to access the PIMP. It took me a while to understand the game, but I think I finally grabbed the basics.

A pimp is the middle man who initiates the connection between the excited, naïve campus girl and a sugar daddy. Pimps naturally deal with older men believing that their fellow youth have nothing to give but empty promises. In most cases they hang out in places that the usual Rolex eating campus student doesn’t go and their lifestyle is different. To be a pimp, you have to be good at your game, sharp and quick to act because you wouldn’t want the blame to be on for anyone’s misfortune. For a pimp to connect fellow girls with older men, they obviously have to know where the older men hangout from, contacts and all that come with connections. The circle of friends that pimps surround themselves with, are definitely older.

In most cases, the cycle begins when the pimps mature friends ask for fresh blood and with no hesitation, trying to impress, they accept claiming to have a couple of friends who would be willing to meet up. Next, the pimp has to go into planning mood. Who should I pick? Is she open to it? Will she embarrass me? Does she have style? There are many questions that have to be put into consideration before the plan is put into consideration. Immediately the impact of social media plays in (21st Century remember!), exchange of Facebook accounts, Instagram or Whatsapp; this depending on the style of the man. The sugar daddy most times has an upper hand in making his various choices. Finally, the pimp goes into persuasion mood. This could probably be the hardest part of the process depending on the type of girl chosen.

There are different types of girls in this situation, those that are pushed into it and those who are willing to venture into it. Depending on the type of girl it is, the pimp has to be ready to play their cards right. The pimp clearly shows overwhelming interest in trying to hook you up, offering the girl his phone number and giving information about him that is clearly not beneficial.

“Last week, he took a trip to Dubai just because he felt like” the pimp says intentionally to grab your attention.

I don’t think there is a particular calibre of girls that are chosen because everyone has their own tastes and preferences but the unifying factor in the end is that the materialistic lifestyle in most cases overshadows the new found friendship.

Pimps in some cases are extroverts and are willing to show and talk about their exciting escapades with their older acquaintances. Have you ever heard of the common campus lingo, being pimped up? Am starting to understand where it comes from. Pimps hook people up with what they would wish to have through interesting means.

“Oh my goodness, you babe! Where did you get those shoes?” says campus girl.

“Some older guy friend of mine who works got them for me, but this is nothing, you should see the bag I also got.”  The pimp says excitedly.

My assumption is they want to prove that whatever they are doing is absolutely fun and should be done by everybody. I was once having a conversation with a bunch of friends and jokingly we agreed that we should all get hajjis for a better and comfortable lifestyle.

Everyone wants the better and finer things in life, for the case of the pimps – it can be done through having and connecting people with older men. Why they do this, probably because they want a share of the profit and it’s in their blood. I continuously ask myself if this whole process is worthwhile. Clearly to the pimps they have nothing to lose, but how about the girls accepting, what are they trying to prove? No one will have a definite answer, but the game still continues.
