Makerere University has stood a test of time in the world of academia, with a now over a hundred of years to show for it.
From the pioneer 14 students to now a mammoth of alumni whose contributions over the past decades have become a beacon of reference to Africa’s progress, the university’s legacy can not be overstated.
The tales of a premier university at the heart of Africa are exciting, intriguing, glamorous and in the recent years; fascinating. All her rich history in form of special milestones, breakthroughs, geniuses and so on and so forth has been complemented by the iconic structure sitting at the center of the institution, the face of the university in most pictures to date – the Main Building.
As the name suggests, the building is inseparable from the university’s story, it is the protagonist of all her illustrations.
The terrors of a certain night in September 2020 did not only leave a dark cloud on the hill but also tainted the rich history of the ivory tower.
Led by the Government of Uganda, Makerere University stakeholders embarked on a mission to restore the indomitable work of architecture, raising over 20 billion to facilitate the works.
Initially, the target was to have the reconstruction completed before the centenary celebrations in 2022 but the inevitable circumstances nullified the plans. It is until this week (mid 2024) that the building has regained its notable look.
No matter how long it has taken, the university is on course to pluck out the thorn that the fire imposed into its flesh. Its completion will definitely be a cause for celebration.
Enjoy the view!
