On Sunday 8th March 2020, Uganda will join the rest of the world to celebrate the International Women’s Day under the theme ‘’Iam generation equality, realizing women’s rights’’. Women such as Oprah Winfrey, Hilary Clinton, Rt. Hon Rebeca Kadaga, Prof Christine Dranzoa (vice chancellor Muni University) have had a great impact towards the society.
As the rest of the world is celebrating this important day, the Bees have been hovering over Mbarara University of Science and Technology (MUST) where a list of top 10 outstanding ladies at this institution was obtained. The survey was based on the positions they are holding and how they used them to influence others positively. In no particular order, the following have made it to the top 10 outstanding ladies at MUST.
Mrs. Martha Kyoshaba Twinamatsiko
She is the current Academic registrar of MUST. She heads a department which acts as the heart of a University. She is among the few ladies in Uganda to hold such a position and also to make it to the top management. In order for someone to be admitted at MUST, Mrs. Martha has be aware since she is the one in charge of admissions and when it comes to graduation, graduands cannot complete the whole process without visiting her department for at least three times, now just imagine the role she is playing.
Dr. Viola Nyakato
She is a senior lecturer and former dean faculty of interdisciplinary studies. Dr. Nyakato is a gender activist who has been putting more emphasis on the issues affecting the girl child both at community and university levels. She has carried out a number of research works promoting a girl child to achieve what she wants and running a campaign to stop based violence during the 16 days of activism.
Dr. Eng. Theodora Twongyirwe Mondo the current dean faculty of applied sciences and technology (FAST). She is among the first few female Engineers the country has had and she is the pioneer of FAST where she serves in the area that mostly dominated by men.
Dr. Angela Musiimenta, deputy dean faculty of computing and informatics. She was the first Ugandan to win a German African innovation incentive award that was funded by the German ministry of education and research. She is known for her outstanding performance at the faculty and MUST at large.
Dr. Clementia Neema Murembe
Senior lecturer at the faculty of interdisciplinary studies. Dr. Neema is a gender and anthropological expert. She is also known for her motherly care towards both students and her fellow members.
Ms. Maureen Kahima
She is holding the position of a University warden and counselor. Ms. Maureen is always at the University to attend to student’s needs. She also fronted the formulation of MUST gender policy to address gender issues.
Ms. Gladys Nakalema
She works in the dean’s office but she has been more influential in the fight against the spread of HIV/AIDS by mobilizing resources, supporting peer groups, providing counselling to students. Ms Nakalema is also known for her care and smile she always gives someone who approaches her.
Ms. Janat Nakachwa, a second year student pursuing Bachelor of medicine and surgery. Janat was the lady fresher in the Guild government of 2018/2019 and the she was elected as GRC to represent people with disabilities (PWDs) in the current guild regime. She is the chairperson of PWDs students’ association at MUST where she always motivate her fellows to continue believing in themselves since disability is not inability.
Ms. Mariam Iculet Arikosi
She is a student pursuing Bachelor of Science in gender and applied women health currently in her second year. Iculet has been influential across where she has engaged herself in activities that empowering the marginalized groups of people, ladies inclusive. She is the vice president one health innovation club at MUST where she mobilized her fellow students to plant over 1500 trees in order to save river Rwizi. She is the only lady aspiring for the post of MUST Guild president.
Nuwahwera Phiona, second year student offering Bachelor of Science in economics and the current Guild minister for Gender and Guidance. Phiona has utilized her position to influence her fellows to become leaders as the only way to curb their unsolved problems and also to fight for their rights. In her term of office, the new gender policy formulated and it is going to be unveiled to the public on women’s day celebrations.
