Hey freshmen, congratulations you won’t be putting on uniforms anymore maybe if you happen to mess out here now that you are going to have a lot of freedom, it might win you a free ticket to police cells and boom! you will be putting on uniforms again.
Anyways forget I said that, now that you have joined university isn’t it exciting? Congratulations again. If you are one of those 14,000 students who were admitted to Kyambogo university last week, here are a few facts and tips you might need to know before you kick start your academic journey at Uganda’s second largest public university and yes that’s the first fact.
History
Located on Kyambogo hill, Kyambogo University was established in the year 2003 under the tertiary institutions act of 2001 and it came in existence after the merger of Uganda Polytechnic Kyambogo (UPK), the institute of teacher education Kyambogo (ITEK) and the Uganda National Institute of Special Education (UNISE).
Organization and –administration
The now 14 year old institution is headed by John Ssebuwufu the chancellor and Professor Elly Katunguka the vice chancellor who has just recently been installed into the position.
As of now, KYU has six faculties and one school- namely; faculty of arts and social sciences, faculty of education, faculty of engineering, faculty of science, faculty of special needs and the school of management and entrepreneurship. Each one of you will belong to one of these faculties and school where you will go to pick your admissions at your respective faculties as assigned on the various notice boards.
Additionally, these faculties have your class timetables, exams timetables and examination permits which will be picked when it comes to classes and exams period respectively. Each faculty is headed by a dean and this official is equivalent to your class teacher in high school. He officiates and directs all activities at faculty level. So in case you have any problem as per academics and STRICTLY academics, not your pocket money issues, please report to the dean. So you must endeavour to know your faculty dean.
Hostels and Halls of Residence
KYU has a total of five halls of residence which are; Nanziri hall (mixed sex) divided into upper lower Kennedy and Blue Nile , Kulubya (boys only), Pearl(girls only) ,North (mixed) and Mandela (mixed). If you are one of the few that happened to scoop yourself a government sponsorship slot and a few private students, you might also be lucky to get a place to reside in these halls. However, if you don’t happen to get one especially for the private students, there is a multitude of hostels you can book and take on stretching from Banda town to Naalya.
Guild Leadership
The new guild government headed by HE Ochieng Joseph will be at your service to give you a hand- right from the moment you pick your admission letter, on reporting and through the registration process. Be ware of the conmen and avoid falling a victim to their charms.
Information
Avoid hearsay, a lot of information including the false will be circulating, kindly keep alert, the most reliable source pertaining all the university programs is the various notice boards at the Senate and the faculties. Please visit these notice boards often and also the university website for certified information .
Reporting Dates
According to the guild information minister Hon Henry Kitakule, freshers are expected to report on Monday 6th of August 2017 and they will be engaged in various orientation sessions that will run for a whole week till the 13th of August, when continuing students will be expected to report . Please endeavor to attend these sessions so as to know what to do so you can avoid having the confused fresher look at the beginning of the semester. Trust me I’ve been there so get it from me.
Bazaar
For starters, bazaar is an annual festival that aims at bringing various merchandise closer to students at relatively cheaper prices including entertainment. It usually runs for one week so if you’ve been worried about where and how to get your hostel stuff like clothes, shoes, beddings, stationery and anything you may need in your room, worry not, the KYU bazaar will be running from the 6th to the 12th of August .
