Kyambogo university administration has confirmed that freshers of the academic year 2021/2022 will be reporting on Saturday 5th February 2022 when the second semester of the academic year 2020/2021 is still running.
It is to be remembered that schools and universities nationwide had to go through two different lockdowns in order to curb down the spread of COVID 19. This saw quite a number of universities embracing ODeL (Open Distance and e learning) in order to successfully continue their academic affairs without so much disturbance.
Kyambogo University did not effectively embrace this system of learning as it was being criticized by the students since it only favored those few with laptops. It so happens that as other universities have welcome first year students as they are already into a new academic year, Kyambogo university still has its first-year students of the academic year 2020/2021 and is too preparing to receive another set of first year students this Saturday.
Furthermore, the finalists are still around waiting to sit their final examinations in March. This confusing situation has left many other students wondering what the fate of these coming students is.
“There is no or very limited space in the halls of residence. Given the fact that finalists are still around, most of the hostels are still fully occupied and we wonder where the new first year students are going to reside from this time up to March when the finalists sit their final exams” one student said.
The other issue was to do with the space in the lecture rooms.
“At the moment, all lecture rooms are being used daily for different lectures up to when we sit examinations in March. How is it going to be possible that the new first year students will get where to learn from? And the matter of two sets of first year students is going to be rather a confusing Situation” another student wondered.
The administration is yet to explain this situation publicly and everyone hopes that whatever is being done is in the best interest of the university.
