MUNI University is the 5th Government public university located in the West Nile district of Arua. It is approximately 567km from kampala. It is one of those Universities with enough facilities but few people to utilize them. On the hill of Muni neighboring Bar-rifah seats the giant main building constructed with funding from the World Bank and the government of Uganda. The university was officially opened by H.E Yoweri Kaguta Museveni the president of the Republic of Uganda on 12th September 2016 and Dr. Erick Adriko Tiyo Sekebuga was set-up as the first chancellor.
Journey and Neighborhood
It’s a seven hours drive from Kampala. From Muni trading centre to the university, it’s a dusty murram road, the dust will shock you and probably you will have to behave like a serpent not to swallow this brown ‘mugati of dust along the way.
It neighbors Muni Teacher Training Centre (TTC) to the west, and the famous Muni girls’ SS to the north. It’s situated on a quiet hill with exorbitant lecture rooms and green tidy compounds, basically because there are few people to trample and litter the compound.
The main building houses faculties of education and looks so neat, free of cobwebs unlike other universities like Makererw where cockroaches and spiders attend lectures together with students.
Courses offered
Muni offers courses in Business Mgt, education, Information Technology and Information systems. Bachelors in Nursing, all education courses and entry to this courses just requires 2 principal passes. For one to secure a place at Muni, he or she must score atleast 8 points in A’Level People with 10 points and above are in most cases taken under the Government sponsorship programe. According to the Academic registrar, Dr.James Lam Lagoro, the university is in the process of introducing other competitive courses to attract more students.
“With the recent upgrade of Arua Hospital to a regional referral hospital, we seek to introduce medicine and surgery. This academic year, we introduced Bachelors in nursing and agriculture which will be based in Abi Zardi farm. In the future, engineering will be in place too under technical guidance from Oraa technical and other technical institutes here in Westnille,” Mr Lagoro says.
Though it’s far from kampala, pubs and other happening places are easily accessible especially in the outskirts of Arua Municipality. Though the University receives students from outside Uganda especially from South Sudan, the population is still less despite the fact that students look happy to be studying abroad.
