Immaculate’s story begins in 2013 when she earned her Bachelor of Commerce degree from Makerere University. Fuelled by the desire to excel in the competitive field of accounting, she embarked on the CPA course with the intention of completing it within two years. Little did she know that her journey would become a decade-long adventure, testing her resilience and dedication.
The initial hurdle for Immaculate was the absence of employment upon enrollment. However, the support from her parents, Mr. Alfred and Mary Basiga, provided her with the encouragement needed to forge ahead. Immaculate emphasizes that her parents’ backing was instrumental during the challenging times, particularly as she later found herself juggling work, family, and the demanding CPA course.
The balancing act proved to be more intricate than she anticipated. Immaculate landed her first job after enrolling in CPA, breaking into the professional sphere. Her employers recognized the value of her commitment to further education, instilling confidence in her capabilities. While many of her peers opted for a Master of Business Administration (MBA), Immaculate acknowledges that her choice to pursue CPA enhanced her practical skills and judgment in accounting.
The twists in Immaculate’s journey were as unpredictable as they were inevitable. A work placement upcountry necessitated weekly travels from Ntungamo District to Kampala for classes. Amidst these challenges, the desire to start a family prompted a five-year break after completing the first two modules. However, Immaculate remained determined to meet the ten-year deadline for completing the CPA course.
The turning point came in 2019 when Immaculate returned to complete the remaining modules, hoping to finish by 2020. Unforeseen circumstances, such as pregnancy and the onset of the Covid-19 pandemic, created additional hurdles. Yet, these challenges also brought opportunities, particularly in the form of synchronous online classes, offering a chance for Immaculate to continue her education despite the global disruptions.
In January 2023, Ms. Immaculate Kyomukama achieved a remarkable feat – she became the only female graduate at the Mbarara examination centre among the handful who completed the CPA course. Reflecting on her transformation, Immaculate notes the profound impact the journey had on her judgment, patience, and humility.
Her advice to aspiring accountants echoes the sentiment that success in the CPA course demands sacrifices, including compromises in social life, sleep, and family time.
