The Vice Chancellor of Kyambogo University, Prof. Eli Katunguka has today, 5th December 2022, addressed the press about the upcoming 18th graduation ceremony which is scheduled to begin on 7th December and end on 9th December 2022.
This was during a press conference attended by Assistant Commissioner of Police Katungwesi Anatoli, Chief security officer of Kyambogo, other security officers and members of the media in NPT conference room.
Prof Eli Katunguka said that over 12,000 students will graduate at this year’s graduation ceremony. This is the largest number of graduands ever since the university started in 2003.
The large figure is comprised of about 5,831 females and 6239 males from the main campus, Bushenyi and Soroti learning centres. He attributed this big number to the decentralization of academic issues to the faculty level, which was implemented this year. This saw many students who had retakes and others who had never been able to finish their academic program come back to complete and thus be able to make it on the graduation lists.
Over 250 students will be graduating with first class degrees. 5 graduands will be awarded Doctorate (PhD degrees) and the rest Bachelor’s Degree programme transcripts, Masters, Diploma and Certificate.
The Minister of State for Higher Education Hon John Chrysestom Muyingo will represent the Minister of Education and Sports, Mama Janet Kataha Museveni who was supposed to be the Chief guest.
The function will commence at 10:00am for all the three days of graduation. Those who are unable to make it physically are advised to follow the proceedings of the ceremony via social media platforms such as YouTube and Zoom.
The list of students to graduate was approved by Senate during a meeting held on 21st November 2022. Students whose results were not presented to Senate at the time of the meeting will miss out on graduation.
“Any student whose results have not been presented to Senate and thus missing on the graduation list will be later required to prove that he cleared all dues and had successfully completed his academic program without undone retakes in order for his transcript to be processed,” the VC remarked.
According to the Vice Chancellor, only thirty students will be unable to graduate. This is because some of these have retakes and others are under investigation following allegations that they connived with members of staff and other people to have their results altered.
Only 8 students will miss out because of missing marks issues.
The Assistant Commissioner of Police, Mr. Katungwesi Anatoli advised parents and relatives coming from upcountry to move in groups comprised of people who are familiar with the city so that they do not get lost.
He added that they should avoid unnecessary movements in the city as they could lose their property.
Regarding security, he urged that vehicles entering the university on the mentioned days should have graduation stickers so that they can easily be identified and allowed quick access to the university premises.
Journalists and members of the press should register with the chief security officers in time in order for them to be permitted to cover the function.
Each graduand is allowed to come with only two people, who should have COVID 19 vaccination cards or a COVID 19 test. These are also expected to follow Standard Operating Procedures (SOPs) in order to curb the spread of the virus.
Guests are discouraged from carrying heavy bags, metallic items and electronic gadgets such as laptops and tablets to quicken the checking process at the gate.
All gates will be open for entrance except for the Eastern gate (Banda gate) which will be used for exit. Other gates will be open for exit after graduation.
Therefore, continuing students may as well stay at their places of residence for all the three days as there will be no lectures. The serious ones can have independent revision and hold discussions.
Congratulations to the graduands!
