Waiswa Ronald Mirondo, a recent Makerere University graduate with a Bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering has raised the flag of the African continent high as he is the only African shortlisted to take part in the Future Play Design challenge 2022 finale that will take place in Denmark.
This is after his climate innovation project known as the Boat project emerged third among the top best global submissions from the world. This comes after he won the World health Summit innovation contest 2021 that took place in South Africa, giving him a chance to feature among the best thirty UNDP youth-led innovation.
The top five winners were given an opportunity to take part in the Challenge in Denmark this September. Since his project made it to the third position, it is obvious that he will compete with the other four.
Sustain Mini team by Merve Ozhan from Turkey was in the lead followed by Zero C team by Amit Priyadarshan from India. Children team by Cessi Heredia from Spain came in the fourth position and a project by Gabriella Cammarta from the United States in the fifth position. Ronald has made proud not only Africa, but also Uganda and Makerere University in particular.
Ronald’s Boat project runs under the theme, “Navigating the changing tides.” It aims at developing culturally rooted, place-based primary care literacy curriculum for African Children. Its purpose is to motivate and quantify behavior change towards a sustainable lifestyle by inviting children to learn, play together and for our future.
The project connects children with nature through play and empowers them to make eco-friendly choices as they compete to produce the smallest eco-footprint. Children are able to visualize the green future that can be created by their actions.
The theme of the contest that will take place in Denmark running for four months from September to December is, “Ethically co-cresting the next generation of sustainability and climate play together with children and families.”
According to UNICEF, it is important that children understand the issue of climate change and need to be involved to be prepared now and in the future.
Waiswa Ronald recently graduated from Makerere University in May 2022 with a bachelor’s degree in Civil Engineering. It is because of his wisdom, intelligence and dedication that he put into his Boat Project that it was considered the third best climate innovation project globally.
Congratulations and best of luck in the forthcoming competitions in Denmark this September.
