On the 1st October 2021, Makerere University College of Computing and Information Science (COCIS) held its Annual COCIS Innovation Day Competition, which is always aimed at nurturing creativity in students. During these competitions, students from COCIS were required to pitch their projects and innovations to the world and the best innovation team would win the award just as the saying goes that may the best team win.
However, this year’s innovation competitions were held virtually via zoom and hosted noble personalities like Prof. Tony Oyana, COCIS Principal, Deborah Naatujuna, Head of Exploration United Nations Development Programme (UNDP) Uganda, and Prof.Eng. Bainomugisha, H.O.D Computer Science Department,Makerere University, Mr. Katumba. I. Koreta, Membership Development Specialist Innovation Village. Others included Ssempijja Ivan, Guild President, Mbusa Joseph, COCIS President, Kansiime Amuza, COCIS Projects Coordinator and Kidega Moses, Secretary of Labour Affairs, National Youth Council and the judges among others.
The event started with an opening prayer from the College Speaker, followed by opening remarks and introductions from the College Projects Coordinator, President, Speaker and the Judges.
The deadlock was later cracked with the pitching, showcase and presentation of amazing innovations of the best 3-team leaders from which one Award-winning Innovation was to be chosen. The projects displayed included The Showcase, a student freelancing platform, The Lesson, an online learning platform for students and The Calcut App (@calcut_app), a Hustle-Free, Intuitive, Seamless and Efficient Cross-Platform Approach to Calculate Cut-Off Points (Academic Weights) for anyone joining campus.
After the presentation, there occurred a hustle and bustle as the judges accessed and awarded the presentations, while the team leaders had their fingers crossed as they awaited the results. As luck would have it, The Calcut App (@calcut_app) from THE C APPS TEAM was declared the Award Winner of this year’s Innovation Day Competitions.
The Calcut App is a Hustle-Free, Intuitive, Seamless and Efficient Cross-Platform Approach to Calculate Cut-Off Points (Academic Weights) for anyone joining campus. Within 300 days since the first launch, the 4.8-star Calcut App (as on Google Play Store) has gained traction with over 1,600 students trusting it and has since then performed over 21,125 calculations. Calculated over 50,000 cut-off points (Academic Weights) and has saved over 1,056 calculation hours for students who are calculating their cut-off points due to its simplicity and intuitiveness powered by an intelligent error-free algorithm that calculates the student’s cut-off points in just split seconds.
Above all, The Calcut App (@calcut_app) is Cross-Platform, Works Offline and therefore it is available for anyone, anywhere and on any device. We as THE C APPS TEAM believe that this app will greatly improve our education system in Uganda and bring us closer to achieving the Quality Education Sustainable Development Goal in Uganda.
The Calcut app was innovated and developed by Mugisa Brian, a first-year student (fresher), pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree in Software Engineering at Makerere University and the CEO and Founder of THE C APPS TEAM. He published it on the Google Play Store on the 5th October 2020, and later in 2021 due to increasing demand for it, he made it Cross-Platform so that it would be available for anyone, anywhere, on any device and any network connection. It is now available on Web, Android, iOS, macOS, Windows and Linux among other platforms.
