To many, a traditional families in Uganda, the metaphor for University is Makerere and so when Evelyn Kabahuma a social science finalist at Makerere University and mother to a three-year old-handsome boy completed her secondary school education.
She was expected to join “Makerere” just like the trend is. However, coming from a moderately middle-class large family. Her dream was about to come to a halt after failing to get admitted onto the government programme and the enormous sum of her tuition was not one her parents were willing to part with.
In the last days of her vacation she decided to go to a salon near her home area and master the art of hair styling where she worked for an entire year before finally joining university. She started out as a salon help but when her hands’ magic had accumulated a faithful number of customers, she spread out and decided to start out her own salon.
She hatched out with a container in Nakulabye but when the K.C.C.A move to demolish all temporary houses was put into practice, she secured renting space at Nana hostels where the quality of her clients changed for the best. Because of the stature of the residents of this place, Eve could now pay her tuition with ease. She also started paying for her little sister and her son’s school fees too.
She earns a minimum of 150,000 shillings on a bad day and with her salary, she has taken her 3 year old son to the best kindergarten facilities a toddler can enjoy and also rents a respectable home in Mengo. Currently, she moved into the new Wandegeya market west wing and her salon is called Joleen salon named after her son. She is relatively expensive but you’re guaranteed a smile at the end of her hands-work in your head.
