I rarely tell people especially my friends that am a fashion architect, that I can invent new designs irrespective of gender , cause they will collectively think am trying to be a Donna Karen, Donatella Versace or Valentino Garavani, which am not.
I can barely spell Valentino’s other name and I had to look it up in order to write it correctly, I don’t dismiss any of those claims fully because I have learned from, and emulated Garavani for the little success I hold dearly to-date.
Your success is based on the course you chart, the effort you put in and the fire in your belly. You may be able to align yourself with the principles or ideals of another. You may even be able to use a blueprint from a path already taken. But what you can’t do is get inside the mind of another and think their thoughts or walk in their shoes.
With people like Shiela, Leah and Ellah among others, independent thinking, self-validation and a personal mission is what set them apart. You do yourself, and your business, a disservice when you try to think and do too much like those you admire.
The quickest way to invite failure into your world is to compare your journey to another. What happens when you mimicking their actions and don’t achieve the same results? What happens when you duplicate their process and it still doesn’t work? For some, it’s crushing. They will spend twice as much time wondering, “why” they didn’t cause the same disruption. Why they didn’t receive the same offers or achieve the same success.
What you could do with the success of these Ugandan Divas or to the male genre with the likes of Salvado, Pablo e.t.c is use their experience as motivation, use their failures as lessons, use their wisdom as guidelines and use their success as inspiration. You invite envy and resentment into your life and business when you start comparing your path to others.
Know your purpose. Set your principles. Determine your priorities and practice them daily. Your commitment and determination to your purpose will generate the “fire in the belly” you need to remain focused on what is true to you and your business.
