Yesterday, Makerere University unveiled a customized graduation gown ahead of the 67th Graduation Ceremony scheduled to take place from 21st to 24th February 2017.
The Makerere University Council approved the introduction of customised graduation gowns for Undergraduate and Graduate programmes (excluding PhDs) with effect from this year’s graduation.
The idea of the Makerere customized gowns is long overdue, this is something they should have thought of many years ago. The Pride and feeling of belonging that comes with donning such a gown that clearly shows that you didn’t fake it is really awesome.
I think, in my opinion, the customized gown was introduced in a bid to curb students that lie to their parents/ guardians by posing in gowns yet they never actually graduated or went to school.
The Makerere University website says; “The customised University Gown is intended to provide uniformity of the academic dress for graduands. It is professionally designed and unique with special features to rekindle the memories of this special day in your life.”
To many students that didn’t read the whole statement about Makerere University Customized gowns clearly, you must have missed the note at the end.
This means that on the 68th Graduation Ceremony, it will be compulsory to have a customized gown. However, trust Ugandans to have a counter measure to such hindrances. Many students might choose to go to Kiyembe to fake gowns as opposed to coughing a rough Shs. 70,000 in Jan-worry of 2018.
