Students are often keen to exercise their rights but recently there has been an interesting twist – some around campus are talking about their right to cheat in university exams. I caught up with Emma Baguma, a third year accounting and Finance student at Kyambogo University and these are his thoughts;
Students around Universities have come out to speak on why they a times have to cheat in an exam here. “As long as it is in Uganda everyone has a right to cheat”, responded Baguma.
Corruption in the country and university is common. The rich can bribe their way to examination success. These lads are willing to pay for anything in campus even changing other students names on your own paper so as to pass an exam.
Then there’s another class of student altogether. The sexy and bootilicious young girls will pass given a full semester of not attending lectures and doing a single course work. I have seen these girls put on short things in exams and will sit directly in front of invigilators showcasing what they hold under so as to keep these starving old guys entertained in the exam rooms.
So if those with money or sexy bodies can cheat, poor students ask, why shouldn’t we?
“Uganda’s schooling system is in crisis,” he continued, as he sipped on his waragi tot pack gazing at me. “Cheating happens at every level. Students bribe to get admission and good results. Research students get professors to write their dissertations.”
“I honestly don’t know whether to laugh or cry,” he said, “The equipment in our science labs should be ripped out and trashed. We pay loads of money but share seats in lecture rooms at times we have to lift seats from class to class while others stand in the windows because of small rooms,” Baguma cried out. He added: “It is like universities are still at their birth rate this ain’t the 50″s.”
The question is, what’s the solution? When will this ever be square? Also the lecturers are not paid in time or the right amounts. This has led to strike after strike. It’s like we are forcing the government to educate us.
People every where have businesses that deal in doing your work for you, just pay and your research will be fully done. A student hands in research from an organisation that is non existent and the other one that is well known and it’s clear as glass how it works but fails and the imaginary organisation gives another a handful of results. Where are we heading to?
This leaves many students marooned by modernity, clinging to the sinking ship of an outdated university education. The right to cheat agitation is no oddity – it is an ironic comment on universities today.
“I really try my best but seeing all my effort and hard work trashed because of just BOU light feather note hence why shouldn’t i sit and relax and see my work done for me?” he concluded!
