Glamour, glitz, pomp and grandeur characterized the first wedding anniversary celebrations of Rajiv Ruparelia, the son to Uganda’s wealthiest business man, Sudhir Ruparelia and who wedded wife Naiya Khagram last year in the United Kingdom.
The Cuba themed cocktail event kicked off around 6pm at Speke Resort Munyonyo and was attended by diplomats, ambassadors, government officials and business executives.
The main celebrants of the day arrived at the venue at around 8pm accompanied by their parents Dr Sudhir Ruparelia and his wife Jyotsna.
In his opening speech, tycoon Sudhir welcomed his guests and thanked them for honouring his son’s special day.
Despite describing Rajiv as a troublesome child in his schools days, Sudhir said Naiya told him he [Rajiv] was the man she had chosen to spend the rest of her life with.
“Thank you for tolerating Rajiv for one year,” Sudhir told Naiya, sending his guests into bouts of laughter. He thanked his wife for raising the kids well especially Rajiv who changed schools several times.
Rajiv, who got married a year ago, is slowly coming through his father’s wings to take over management of most of the family’s — the Ruparelia Group business operation in real estate, hotels and tourism, education and insurance — running titles like Crane Management Services, Victoria University, Speke Resort Munyonyo, Speke Apartments among other businesses run by the family in Uganda.
“Thank you Naiya for accepting him and my parents for raising and fashioning me into the man that I am today,” Rajiv said.
He also praised and thanked his sisters for guiding him and ensuring he didn’t have a lonely childhood and went ahead to thank his father for investing in Uganda and employing over 8,000 Ugandans. He promised to keep the candle burning in that direction.
The cake cutting culminated into a glossy fireworks display that lasted for over 10 mins as artistes like Naava Grey, and Vinka serenaded the night away that had close to 1,000 guests eat and drink on the house.
