There are very few Ugandan students on the micro-blogging site, Twitter, which lets you stay
connected to people through tweets. Twitter is also a useful resource center where information can be
obtained and new people met, one of the reasons twitter attracts few people, especially students, may
be the fact that it has character limitation yet many chaps want to write/text till their fingers get
numb; Just like they do on Facebook and Instagram.
In a bid to discover the prominent students on the Twitter timeline, Campusbee using a criteria which will later on be explained (that’s if you make it to the end alive),
came up with a list of students who you can now call ‘the most prominent student tweeps,’ the list will be
contain five students who use twitter for fun, communication or even business and will be published every
Tuesday (relax you might be next).
5). @Fodexpressions: Gilbert Opondo 1,115Followers
With an outstanding number of followers, well above the thousand, Gilbert is a vibrant blogger
streaming from the prestigious Wandegeya based University MAK. His tweets are very informative,
educative with a finishing of humor, but his blog, well, his blog sums it all and you can only get the
link if you check out his twitter bio. Plot Twist, who doesn’t need humor?
We had a chat with him and this is what he had to say;
Where do you see yourself on social media 5yrs from now?
I think I will still be a grounded chap even 5 years from today. I believe in humility, so don’t expect
me to give newbies a hard time.
UOT twitter topics, do you consider them narrow? Recently it was a talk about washing hands
before…!
I won’t say they are narrow, although we at times become vain and then there’s elitism which gets to
the heads of UOTs. What you are calling narrow is merely banter that I consider good for the heart,
we sometimes need a dose of humor.
But an excessive dose of anything comes at a cost…
There’s too much banter that I won’t deny but that’s a sign UOTs are in the know of what’s going on
around them. It’s actually good that UOT mock the sorry state of affairs in Uganda because humor
captures the attention of even those who wouldn’t have followed the topic of discussion.
What are your top 3 social media sites?
Uhmmmm, okay favorite is mobile money…lol
Minus jokes, its twitter, I’ve reservations about whatsapp and Facebook although they’re my other
preferences. So, most of my time is consumed by twitter.
What’s your take on the people who think they own twitter, A.k.a bigwigs?
I actually like what they are doing, establishing nobility or should I say levels. Without levels society
is a bottomless pit, what I don’t agree with, is the manners of a few. There are those who gloat about
their jobs and “fat” salaries forgetting they’re boasting to kids in university and vac. How I wish they
knew many of these kids are having half of what they’re only achieving now even without joining the
work field. So I agree with nobility if only it carries itself like royalty.
I am not mentioning names because those I directed to are known, they will get the memo that, I’m
sure of.
Has twitter affected your academics in a way, and have you made any dimes of twitter?
It hasn’t affected my academics in any way.
I have not made any money directly but I’ve built a network that has gotten me some nice money,
always giving me opportunities.
4). @Triciatwasiima: Tricia Twasiima 2,143Followers
Tricia is a feminist and a law student at MUK, needless to say, I am pro-woman (see the difference?
Yes). This not easily intimidated womyn also owns a blog whose link you can obtain off her twitter
bio, plus the bio is quite interesting if not intimidating. She’s also the Managing Editor of the ‘Makererean’, MAK’s official newspaper.
When we asked if she had gained from the TL, “I have made some good friendships off the TL
and it’s a really good info source, I can’t count the number of times #tweephelp has saved my
life.” Was the response we got. Nonetheless we talked to her more and here is what she had to
say;
Has twitter affected your academics in away,, and have you made any dimes off twitter?
No it’s little impact on my academics aside from the times I tell myself I’ll read and two hours
later I haven’t done so because I’ve been on TL. No I have not made any money off twitter
Where do you see yourself on social media 5yrs from now?
Where do I see…I hope making a large difference using social media and creating focus on
issues usually ignored; gender issues, etc.
Do you think brands are killing twitter fun since tweeps these days are paid to influence
TTs?
I don’t think so, I mean I don’t see how having a few people tweet about an event or whatever
stops the rest from fun tweeting.
What’s your take on cyber bullying?
It’s disgusting really how much some people enjoy bullying others. It’s easy to hide behind a
keyboard and be a bully but it’s a shame really that so many people encourage it.
What drives you on the TL, emotions or life experiences?
3). @Kakatshozi: Florence Kyohangire 2,710Followers
A humanitarian, journalist, feminist among others, Florence is a vibrant lady with an interesting
wit and an amusing TL. A student of UCU and a friend to many, when asked
if she considered herself a big wig, I bet she smiled when she said this, “No. I don’t think
I’m a big wig, But because of different egos I guess, some people feel like twitter can’t
accommodate everyone. That’s what bigwigs get wrong. This is A social network not their ‘jajaz’
sitting room.”
So we went ahead and quizzed her about this social network that is no anyone’s “sitting room” and this is how
it went down.
Do you recall the first tweet you published?
*laughs* No, I don’t, I opened an account and it took me almost a year to get how twitter
works.
What drives you on the TL, emotions or life experiences?
None of the two… my tweets are inspired by my thoughts, or reaction to other tweets I see on
the TL. Emotions and life experiences sound too deep.
Do you think brands are killing twitter fun since tweeps these days are paid to influence
TTs?
Not really because every tweep can choose what to focus on and what to ignore. Even as some
people do their endless ’bulango’ and bore us, some others continue tweeting normally.
UOT twitter topics, do you consider them narrow? Recently it was a talk about washing hands
before…TL?
Relationship jazz because personally, it’s not important to me who is f*cking who, though the
jazz comes to me, I will sip on coffee as I scroll. Also bringing people’s families into arguments is disrespectful.
The things you post on the TL, is it really you, or a demon within that begs to escape
once in a while?
Some things I post really matter to me, but most times it’s that demon.
What do you think of campusbee?
Campusbee is dope, growing with time. It has become more informative and entertaining, at
first they would just throw a headline with only hearsay but now, you can read a story and tell
they did some research and investigations. The team is doing a good job.
2). Jude Mugabi 4,397Followers
The fear of a social media lynch mob is what probably keeps Jude in his lane, I mean, his bio
says it all. Jude is a MUK student and also self-acclaimed social media marketer, of course with
a large following, he is able to influence a small notch of everything he wants to influence on
the TL.
When asked if TL populace is a blessing or curse to him, he simply said ” It comes with both
pros & cons. People expect a lot of you so some get disappointed when they realize you’re not
supernatural .But that also boosts my confidence. + I think some people believe in me a lot &
approach me for help/advice.” We talked to him and he had more to say;
What are your top 3 social media sites?
I only use twitter & Whatsapp.
The things you post on the TL, is it really you, or a demon within that begs to escape
once in a while?
Most people I meet tell me that I don’t look like my tweets, of course I’m younger compared
to what they expect. I don’t know how I am supposed to look like my tweets but I tweet what
comes to mind at that moment though if it’s a sensitive topic, I think it through.
UOT twitter topics, do you consider them narrow? Recently it was a talk about washing hands
before…TL?
I follow a wide range of people from vacists to campusers to recently employed and those
who’re actually specialists in their fields. There are many topics you get to see & engage in like
politics, entertainment, business, economic, etc. I rarely engage in dirty talk.
What’s your take on cyber bullying?
Of course, it’s a sad thing, sometimes we don’t know when it crosses from a joke to an act of
cyber bullying. Others I think it’s a character to bully others but those who really know me know
I accommodate any person or idea. I’ll not exonerate myself, once in a while I troll.
Trolls and tweefs, do you consider them a brewery of virtual enemies?
But I don’t think I have created enemies online. Plus I don’t follow up on tweefs for the end
games. But for some people, you can tell there’s a recurring feud always.
Do you recall the first tweet you published?
Yeah, I think I was telling Nicholas Opiyo how much I admired him.
Any childhood memories that you would love to share?
Well, I can’t really get many off my head right now but I was brought up by a single mother &
other women, so my friends tell me I was raised in an “incubator”. My life was kind of soft
someone always there to do something for me pampered a lot & I was a bright kid and I
feared canes(kiboko) so I was very obedient.
The ladies who showcase nudity and I mean physical and mental nudity on the TL, what
do you think of them?
For young folks like me I’ve no problem seeing naked pictures, if I wanted to see them, I
would know where to find them but the problem is people displaying their own nudity, I think
it’s reckless & carelessness. Why take them in the first place if you don’t want them consumed
by the public? I wouldn’t show sympathy for one who’s nudes leak.
Jude loves to keep his TL as decent as possible and he has managed to accomplish this by
according people the respect he deserves. To all new tweeps and students misusing twitter,
“Maybe I forgot to stress that twitter is a great opening to make meaningful connections with
mentors & employers”, were his parting words.
1). @Nuwaha17: Nuwaha 5,667Followers
Nuwaha, a MUK student is probably remembered for provoking the Kenyans with the TT
#KOTvsUOT that recently trended though UOT were hit so bad, they resorted to chanting and
feigning bankruptcy. Nuwaha is a very interactive person, fun and interesting. So, we talked
to him and this is what he had to say.
What have you gained from TL prominence, i mean you’re one of those prominent
students on the TL?
Fun…That’s the Basic thing, I’m a “Happy” and people person…I’ve made very many friends as
well..
You get Job opportunities to Market, Run and Promote events & products on TL but I can’t
manage that. I find myself drowned in the Fun part.
What do you have to say about the TT that you started a few days ago.. #KOTvsUOT?
The KOT “thing” we have is not war, it’s to just to create Unity and togetherness. Kind of ironic
by the way, we try to get as one Twitter Family.
Why do you think few students are on twitter?
Most just don’t get it, they find it “demanding”, If you get what I mean, Can’t find a better way
to describe that.
Lol… they just don’t get it… interesting. Do you consider yourself a #Bigwig?
*laughs* Bigwig..? No, Maybe when I get Verified…LOL.
The ladies who showcase nudity… and I mean, physical and mental nudity on the TL, what do you
think of them?
Like Nudes on TL..?? I Love them Nudes fam, Nudes to me are Great, But having them on TL is
Crazy…Actually not Crazy but Stupid… But Mental Nudity, great stuff, girls can have dirty
Sexual talk on TL, I’m fine with it.
Where do you see yourself on social media 5yrs from now?
Where am I supposed to be..?? I’ll still be me, the current me…
Tweefs and trolls… what do you think of the whole package?
We all love Kick Boxing, WWE and watching Action Movies, don’t we?? People Fight and
make fun of each other… Tweefs & Trolls are a BIG YES.
Oomf said “Tweefs and Trolls are the backbone of the Twitter Economy” We got to respect that
for Twitter to be Twitter.
What drives you on the TL, emotions or life experiences?
“Nothing like that drives me on TL”. I don’t think I’m Emotional, I’m just a Lousy Guy who
doesn’t give a Fuck… I just Tweet whatever hits me. I just Tweet whatever comes into my head,
I don’t get offended or driven by Emotions on TL.
You mean to say, you are like a headless chicken?
Exactly, are you reading my Mind..?? Coz I was about to say that.
UOT twitter topics, do you consider them shallow? Recently, it was a talk about washing
hands before…
I don’t judge the TL, everything is Relevant or Interesting to someone. Sex talk, Politics, Jokes,
and Trolls, everything, someone is Interested.
The things you post on your TL, is it really you, or a demon within that begs to escape once
in a while?
It’s just me…No Demon, but who knows, I might be the one in the Demon not the Demon in
me…
Are you a cyber-bully?
I’m not a Cyber Bully…. Cyber Bullying is a Crime, right..?? And I’m not a Criminal.
So do you mean to say that if it wasn’t a crime, you would gladly do it?
Obviously….Imagine Prostitution was Legal, how many would be in for it..? Very many…
What are your views about campusbee?
I think you guys are Great but need to get Serious….Don’t ask me serious on what…
Okay… now we need a photo of you.
Even if you sent a Million Shillings…
Well as there are many other students out there that maybe popular on the TL, these are some of those that we were able to get for today. We’re returning with the second list!
