Campus life may be the most interesting moment in everybody’s life but this may not be the case when it comes to feeding. being a stage experienced by youth, campus life is interesting because of the partying, beautiful girls and the sex. Most of the students want to keep afloat in this aspect and therefore spend the little they have going for campus parties, buying designer clothes and latest gadgets- they forget to include meals in their budget. This, therefore, sees them hustle out during meal time throughout the whole semester.
Kyambogo is neighbored by Banda, a slum known to many- is where most of the hostels Kyambogo students reside are located. When it comes to meals, Banda has several restaurants from the famous KFC (as it’s locally known (not part of the famous Kentucky Fried Chicken franchise) to the smallest roadside vendor selling fries (chips). Banda students live on constrained food budgets simply because they allocate less on food and high on others. These therefore see students opting for the famous Rolex, kikomando, chips, or molokony for lunch or supper.
The worrying part for Banda is the condition in which these eats are prepared. Banda is a very dusty place and if you move through it you will witness how it’s flooded by people preparing eats on both sides of the dusty streets. Though such conditions are dangerous to health, Kyambogo students are seen buying it with ease some even feel classy especially like the deep fried chicken which looks maroon simply because it has been dipped in food color. Rolexes and kikomandos are highly consumed by these university students as well.
When our scribe hit the streets of Banda to find out why students care less about any health hazards they may arise from eating such food, most students defended themselves as follows: one Thomas a 2nd year student said he eats kikomando and rolex just because it’s cheap and once you eat it you will be filled up for a long time.
Esther a computer science student says at times if you eat a decent meal during lunch, when it’s supper time, you feel like having something light and so I eat chips which just balances the equation.
The highest percentage of students at Kyambogo feast on these eats not considering much of the fact whether the food preparation environment is even clean or not.
However, a few good budget planners enjoy their meals decently through the semester from the good restaurants around Banda like ‘KFC’, Teso restaurant, Dawa and many more.
