The event is orchestrated by hall leaders, who allegedly act at the orders of the Spirit of Lumumba, and a one Gongom,… The “possessed “hall leader spreads the word and the boys prepare. Word moves around rapidly and at the strike of midnight, a siren is heard. Bare chested boys, clad in underwear or briefs dash outta their rooms and convene in the quadrangle.The hall anthem is sang;a vulgarized version of the Buganda anthem, and a number of other vulgar songs are sung. The night’s leader goes ahead brandishing the hall flag, closely followed by nearly the entire hall.
The boys, like a group of harmless savages run around half naked chanting slogans and sweetly singing obscene songs targeting Ddumba Ssentamu’s wife and mother…The naked mile is popular, as it involves jogging around the University halls and picking routine participants along the way, The Grand finale is always the mad dash to the barricaded swimming pool. The boys and a few girls climb over the wall fence for a midnight dip, the pool askari looks on sadly.After a cool 20 mins of fun, swearing, swimming, the drenched boys retire after abusing Ddumba’s family once more.
It’s just a harmless and healthy session of solidarity and nothing immoral transpires save the sweet songs,… It’s Friday, I smell a naked mile looming.
