They are called Nkumba’s black spots. These have been known as Nkumba University’s most dangerous places, for over years. These zones have stood out because of their escalating crime and have been scenes for theft, robbery and murder. Many students around the university refer to them as no go areas during the early morning and nights. These two black spots are:
Kabira-SCIAD Foot Path
The narrow path around the football pitch separated by Kabira, the thick forest at SCIAD (School of Commercial Art & Design).
Tirupati Hostel Road
This black spot is the deadliest. Its located at the stone quarry along the road to Tirupati hostel, encompassed by a bush, and surrounded by hostels, Abba, Saaner and Victoria.
Students have been robbed off their belongings that inclusive of phones, wallets, and laptops to an extent they are sometimes thumped and drenched down the stone quarry trenches.
In 2012, a dead body was found rotting in the bush along Tirupati road. In 2014 a student was hacked and dumped there not forgetting the most recent occasion when a motorist was robbed off his Abba motorcycle at the Saaner gate after being hit hard with a hammer on the head.
Students have are bitter with the university despite it owning the land where these black spots are has continued to keep a deaf ear about this whole insecurity issue. Various advice has been given by the stakeholders all directed on putting this land to use.
