He’s the freshest phenomenon on radio and he’s steadily growing his strides. He’s Rude Boy Keller commonly known as Bryan McKenzie. His vocals made their way to our ears when he took over Hot 100 in the morning to present by far the best morning show on radio and then he made a stop over in our faces when he had a stint at WBS’s Jam Agenda. Campusbee caught up with him at the Pizza Hut launch for a 10 minute ambush and he shared his memories.
Who is McKenzie Bryan?
Sabiti Bryan McKenzie are my names, born and raised in Mbarara, and little bit of Kampala. I’m a radio personality and a media freak. I love everything to do with the media. I’m literally everywhere there is in media, I’m an events manager and proprietor of Keller PR. Most importantly, I’m a father.
Take as aback your Campus Life.
I went to Makerere University, did a Bachelors in Tourism. I was living at a place called Royal hostel in Nankulabye. I had my own room but before, I was staying with a friend at first who later ended up becoming my tight friend and at the same time I was working while at campus.
How did you hustle out the two (working and campus)
Well to be honest, I got a dead year and a lot of things happened during that time. My guardian never wanted me to pursue radio while at campus because for him campus was the bigger deal than radio. When I joined Hot 100 for a professional radio career, I got into a bit of problems with my guardian which culminated into a dead year and I started literally living on my own.
Did you even graduate?
Yeah sure, I graduated but later than anyone in my lot and I took five years in University as opposed to the normal three years and that was because of the dead year.
Did you get them retakes?
I didn’t get any retake while at campus surprisingly. I can’t really tell you how that happened but I never got any retake at Makerere University. I guess this happened miraculously.
Am sure you were a ladies wine at Campus, How did you handle relationships?
I was is one relationship at Campus (His facial expression says he’s lying at this moment but its his word against mine) unlike the likes of The Mith who loved women a lot( The Mith happened to seat nearby as the interview went on). I settled with one lady while at campus and from 2005 till 2010 i was in one relationship.
That’s around the time…(and now he starts gambling on words, its clear he’s now lying). Around 2009, I got a baby and that’s when my relationship ended.
So why did your relationship end after you got a baby, did you cheat on your girlfriend.
It just ended man, that’s where it ended. My baby was not with my official girlfriend and that’s where we stopped. That’s why I became single till today. (Mckenzie is Single!, Okay)
How did you manage a broke season at campus?
Uhhm, Milk and four doughnuts was my stable meal when I ran broke. That was like shs600 for the milk and every doughnut was shs100, so shs1000 would sort me out everyday and I used to walk on a daily (I walked to work way before even Besigye did). I would survive on averagely 1k daily beside a rolex once in a while and maybe the food given at work.
What are those Wow moments that made your stay at Campus
I remember in my first semester we had a strike and that was probably the best thing that happened to me. I got a chance to stay longer at campus, my uncle who was in South Africa at that time told me it’s okay I could stay in campus. That’s around the time when wow factors were happening, that’s when I backslide from being a christian, we started partying then, I experienced one of my coolest moment.
And the embarrassing moment?
Uhhm I went to club silk for campus night on a Tuesday that same night we came back to our hostels very drank. I happened to black out outside my door, half my body was inside and the other out like from 6am till Mid-day. No one touched me, no one bothered, I woke up when my stuff was intact and music was playing. I think that was the most embarrassing moment. I had other mild embarrassment like when I was robbed on my way to work and so on.
How was your life at Campus, in a summary?
I didn’t live much of a campus life because I was working while studying. My campus life that I lived was mostly…(describe it in three words, I interrupt). As opposed to the three-word description, I will say it was an exceptional experience for me.
What’s your advice to Campusers that want to take your trend?
I think a lot of people have a problem with finishing campus like I did, its because we are so hungry looking at others win and gain. All your OBs are successful in life, some are driving cars, these days a form four vacist is driving a car and renting a 700k apartment. You are at campus and have literally nothing and that bothers you.
I think it will be more important that you should not have that educational background for anyone else but you because when you’re out here in the field, any talent needs paperwork attached to it. Do the time, go through campus, get a degree, get whatever it is you are pursuing at campus. I think there is a lot of fun after campus. If I was at campus now, I would decide to finish my years and enjoy life afterwards.
