My heart pours out for the many ‘Makerere drop-outs’ out there waiting on the free food at home, fighting with siblings for T.V channels, hunting for gambling spots, looking for new ways of conning girls, making Java fiends among other silly things. This idle stage is one that makes hooligans. Do not let yourself be less productive, here are a few tips on how you can spend this unwanted free time.

Exercise and Meditate. Never have time to exercise? 10 minutes is enough to get off some push-ups and crunches. Do that 2-3 times a day, and you’ve got a fit new you, one that you will admire all your life, probably may bring you potential ‘blessers.’ You don’t need a yoga mat to do meditate. Just do it at your desk. Focus on your breathing. A quick 5-10 minutes of meditation (or even a nap) can be tremendously refreshing.

Make money. This is my favourite productive use of free time. I have a list of articles I need to write, and when I get some spare minutes, I’ll knock off half an article real quick. If you get 5-10 chunks of free time a day, you can make a decent side income. Figure out how you can freelance your skills, and have work lined up that you can knock out quickly — break it up into little chunks, so those chunks can be done in short bursts. You can also keep busy and go work with some relatives, that way you make some little money that you can use to buy crop tops, moccasins and alike.

Make unofficial visits. By this I mean use this time to visit all those relatives, girlfriends, side chics you’ve never had time to check on. That way you can get some scolding, cuddling or even money from those relatives who missed you so much, hence increasing your pocket change.

Go demand people for your money.  Since you have so much free time on your hands, you can use this given opportunity to demand all those people who have been ransoming you on your money or take those invoices to offices where you offered your services.

Phone calls. Keep a list of phone calls you need to make, with phone numbers, and carry it everywhere. Whether you’re at your desk or on the road, you can knock a few calls off your list in a short amount of time. The phone call may land you on a job interview.

Step beyond your usual comfort zone, You will find out that you have dimensions to yourself that you weren’t even aware of before. By stepping beyond your usual comfort zone, your free time becomes a journey of self-discovery and helps you to grow. Moreover, it helps you to stay interested in sparking your curiosity and broadening your awareness.

Try new things that you’ve always wanted to try but make excuses for not doing, including by saying you haven’t “got the time” – use your free time! Do things you loved doing 10 years ago but have let go by the wayside since. Pick them up again and see where they take you this time. It will probably feel odd getting used to something you haven’t tried for ages and possibly time has caused things to change considerably but enjoy the challenge involved in renewing your interest. I will personally try out swimming, it’s an experience I believe will experiences that will excite and energise me.

Try them out, let’s see if you won’t utilise your ‘youth years’ un-regrettably!!
