While some of us seek solace in the melodies of music, others push further to make their own melodies. Melodies that other people can obsess over. Of course one’s talent is to be checked, otherwise I would be the Aretha Franklin of Uganda, but my talents belong elsewhere. However, Katende Andrew Stephen aka Drey has sought out to create his own melodies with an enormous talent backing him up.
Drey is a civil and environmental engineering student half the time at UCU Mukono campus, and an Afro-pop/soft dance hall artist the other time. The love for music and the exuberant excitement from his studio sessions have pushed him to work harder at his career. He started out young, lip syncing to all the hit songs on radio growing up, and in 2010, during his high school era, conjured a talent writing lyrics for his music. The professional bit kicked in around 2014, but the omen had been around him all his life.
Drey and his business partner Brian Kasasira ventured into the record label business, starting up their very own fresh and exhilarating record label called “The State-men.” Drey is the genius behind the whole concept, and Brian is the money behind the business. Together they have groomed several upcoming artists by growing their brands. Drey too has benefited from the label. It funds all his music escapades, and has provided a devoted team that polishes his brand as well.
The desire to make something of himself and leave a legacy behind have pushed and motivated the hardworking man he is right now. However just like Sam Smith started out cleaning bar toilets before becoming the sensation he is, Drey has had numerous obstacles in his path. Studio time, airplay, expenses, music promotion are some of the challenges he faces just like any other struggling artist. He knows he will make a music sensation of himself someday but if that doesn’t pan out, then he can fall back on the engineering degree he’s pursuing.

Stories of the young and motivated surely do inspire many to go after what they want. Drey is studying but still making a mark that is completely off the career he is studying for. Creating several future options for his life.
