Ndejje Rejects People Power Movement as Two Candidates get Nominated for Guild

Ndejje University politics has for long been calm and peaceful until this particular race as one of the guild presidential candidates was flanked by a number of leaders from the ‘People Power’ movement.

This week, during the guild presidential debate at the main campus of the university in Luwero, one of the presidential candidates, Nabacwa Milca was accompanied by people power strong man and Member of Parliament for Mityana, Zakke Francis alongside a number of defiant youths from Makerere university headed by ‘strike master’ David Musiri. This raised eyebrows on whether the candidate was affiliated to people power in a university where guild candidates have always been standing as independent persons.

Zakke, who is an alumnus of the same University was stopped by policemen and members of staff from the dean of students’ office and was barred from reaching the campaign venues on suspicion that he would cause violence. However, Zakke defied orders and escaped into the crowd of students who were already chanting praises on him and Milca in People Power slogans.

According to an anonymous member of staff, Zakke came uninvited and his presence was spurring Ndejje’s politics towards a political party basis which was not in line with the Ndejje university policies and constitution.

“We have never had a candidate who forms allies with political parties and movements in the country. Ndejje’s politics has always been neutral and independent. This is why we tried to stop him (Zakke) from reaching the rowdy students. We do not want chaos caused by political parties like those in Makerere and other universities here,” he told our reporter during an interview.

MP Zakke however urged that he’s an alumnus and is free to come to the university any time and drum support for any candidate of his choice. Zakke later defiantly made his way to the campaign grounds and hundreds of students surrounded him chanting songs of liberation, from People Power to ‘tuliyambala engule’.

So far, two candidates are contesting for the guild office of the university and these are; Nabachwa Milca Alitubeera, a third year student of electrical engineering at the main campus who happens to be the only female contestant and Kahinda Adon, also an engineering student at the same university. For the position of vice guild; Kukunda Ark Solomon, a second year SWASA student is tussling it out with Gamukama Raymong also a second year student of bachelors in commerce.

The elections and voting will be happening this week Friday at both main campus and Kampala campus with an extension of voting to the weekend students of Kampala campus on Saturday.
