Richard Ssebuganda, a Makerere University medical student, who in February 2022, lost his hand to a tear-gas canister explosion, has declared his intention to pursue a Law course at Uganda Christian University (UCU) in aim to get justice against brutality he experienced.
Ssebuganda, who was pursuing a Bachelor’s Degree of Biomedical Sciences at Makerere, lost his right hand when a teargas canister exploded while he attempted to throw it out of his room, at Lumumba hall of residence.
The canister was allegedly fired into the room by Police during a student-protest that broke out at the university premises during the same time.
The student has now embarked on a mission to seek justice for what he describes as “cruelty against nature” which he tags upon the Uganda Police Force.
“I thus have decided to abdicate my medical vocation and face-off with tyranny, and face off with injustice and catachresis.” he wrote, in a message to Aiden Kaliisa, a member of the opposition political party – NUP.
Earlier, in an interview with Campus Bee, Ssebuganda expressed his intention to take on a different specialty in studies, one that wouldn’t involve a lot of physicality, after he lost his right hand. That only left his dream cut short in the medical field.
The student is now seeking financial support as he moves to join UCU for his pursuit of the LLB (Bachelors of Law) qualification.

On 8th February 2022, while in my room in Lumumba Hall room number A22 Makerere University, I lost my hand, courtesy of the Uganda Police Force and Makerere Administration.
To date, I have never received justice. Such are the cries of a million of vulnerable people.
Such are the generous gifts that some people with power offer to the innocent Ugandans.
Nevertheless, I feel something can be done to end the cruelty against nature. Something can be done to counteract barbaric tendencies.
I thus have decided to abdicate my medical vocation and face-off with tyranny, and face off with injustice and catachresis.
This requires knowledge of the LAW for which I request school fees support as I enroll into my first year of LLB (Bachelors of LAW) at Uganda Christian University(UCU)
