A total of 1,177 students from Uganda Christian University (UCU), Main campus were on Friday the 27th October presented before the Chancellor Archbishop Church of Uganda Stanley Ntagali, who conferred upon them academic qualifications for finishing time at the university. This took place at the 4th part of the 18th graduation ceremony.
The students who successfully completed diplomas, bachelors, masters and post graduate programs had their names read out by their faculty heads, so they could enjoy a short lived moment of fame to walk. The students were expected to walk across a red carpet towards the tent of the chancellor and the guests, a moment that was evidently a challenge for some of the graduands. The ceremony took place at the university new pitch starting from 10am until midday after all the names were exhausted. 29 of these students received first classes.
A number of high profile employers from some of Kampala’s biggest firms were present. Some of the guests included Jennifer Musisi, the executive director of Kampala City Council Authority (KCCA), the retired Justice of the Supreme Court James Ogoola, representatives from the ministry of education, the Buganda government, cabinet ministers, and members of parliament.
Musisi in an interview with the Bee was impressed by UCU students in employment.
“As an employer, I mentioned that we have been impacted by the quality of the students from this university” she said to the blog.
The Vice Chancellor (VC) Rev. Dr. John Senyonyi giving his speech said that the university has been able to maintain an excellent physical structure built up “against a backdrop of an oppressive tax regime.” He added that despite this, the university remains the most beautiful in Africa.
The VC also presented four serving guild officials who have excelled in leadership and service, in the inaugural award Chancellor’s Students Leadership Excellence Award.
The VC said that the university has up to 40 staff members holding PHDs, including six that were awarded this year alone.
In his speech, the Chancellor advised the studebts to hold their university in high regard and make UCU their alma meter.
“Today you will be going out as alumni of this university” said the Chancellor.
The guest speaker, Ram Gidoomal, a Kenyan born, UK based Christian business man and board member of International Justice Mission advised the students to maintain integrity, one of the core values of the university
“Integrity is a key value to hold onto and never to compromise on” he said which he learnt from being a follower of Jesus.
The speaker was also the guest speaker at the public lecture that took place at Imperial Royal on Wednesday on the topic “Can business build a better world.”
