A 14-year-old pupil of Home Care Primary school in Kakumiro, Mubende has filed a case against Makerere University’s Infectious Diseases Institute (IDI) for negligence after circumcising him without his parents’ consent.
Through his guardian identified as Enoch Turinawe, the 14-year-old minor says that doctors from IDI came to his school in June last year who later failed to treat him after circumcision. According to this boy, the doctors asked him not to tell his parents, something that prevented him from getting proper medical treatment.
Due to severe bleeding, this boy says that it caused his penis and testicles to swell, a condition that brought discomfort in his life. After discovering his post circumcision swelling, his parents took him for proper medical treatment.
In a case filed at Kampala High Court, the boy demands compensation for his suffering and injuries with Shs10 Million from IDI . This teenager also demands IDI to pay him Shs 85000 for special damages.
IDI was established as a non-profit institute with the help of donors in 2002 aimed at helping in the fight against HIV/AIDS in Uganda. It is an integral part of Makerere’s College of Health Sciences at Uganda’s biggest public University.
