It was joy and ululations yesterday at Bugema University main campus as more than 1700 students graduated with masters, bachelor’s degrees, diplomas and certificate in various courses.
The event that was postponed from October to yesterday November 13 due to unavoidable circumstances saw various students reaping the fruits of hard work.
The ceremony was presided over by Dr Richard Rajarathan, president of the Washington Adventist University in Maryland, USA, and the Chancellor Dr John Kakembo.
Dr Kakembo advised graduates to engage in entrepreneurship activities so as to generate income for their living. He also told the1700 graduands to be involved in income generating activities instead of waiting for employment.
“Now that the university has imparted knowledge and skills in you, don’t seat down because the job is taking long to come your way; start your entreprenuiship projects now to help you survive,” Dr Kakembo advised.
He added that the university is committed to extending the best learning services to its up country campuses so as to extend quality education closer to people.
Rajarathan warned the students agaisnt indiscipline as they go out to set up themselves in the job market.He advised them to focus on success journey and destination.
“You need to be honest with morality, truth and integrity. No matter how intelligent you are, only your action will lead to your destiny,” he said.
The university will now run virtual classrooms in national and regional centers at the same time, reducing the number of lecturers who will be supposed to travel to those centers. The university has undergraduate students admitted at Elgon View College at Eldoret and Kisii Campuses in Kenya.
The Seventh Day Adventist institution, fully accredited as a university by the Adventist Accrediting Association based in Maryland, USA, currently has over 3,000 students from 17 countries. Most of the students come from Kenya, Rwanda, Tanzania and Zambia.
Years back, the university signed a Memorandum of Understanding with Kenya Accountants and Secretaries National Examinations Board (Kasneb) to act as an examination centre for Ugandan students. The university is also partnering with Cisco to offer a variety of training programmes.
