Time and again there is a case of mob justice in relation to theft in Makerere. We all cannot forget the terrible death of Makerere’s own, David Ojok that was murdered in a terrible mob earlier this year at Nkurumah and yet one wonders why thieves still choose halls of residence as their target places.
Yesterday night, Lumumba hall of Makerere University was on fire after an alleged thief was caught on someone’s door. A midst shouts of “Ehh tight security Oyee,” Lumumba boys tracked down the thief who was running in a zig zag form as he sketched for direction to run. Meanwhile, the Mary Stuart girls cheered on their boys with emphatic chants of “Weewe! Ehh Lumumba Zooye!!!” Before long, a male youth was dragged by boys with long canes to Mary Stuart packing lot as police followed in their awake.
“I heard “WEE WEE” from my room and came down in a rush only to find a meeting that there was no thief. No sooner had I reached my room than I heard serious weewees again. I just picked my Mpenkoni from the corner and joined the chase,” One Lumumbist explained.
The thief who was lucky enough to have stand-by police around received some beating while on police car which drove off fast to save him from the angry crowd.
Left looking dreamily at their canes, Lumumba boys chanted “ehh tight security zoyee!!!, ehh police zee!! with support from the Boxers. The Lumubox Anthem led by former Chairperson Lumumba, Willo was then sang before the boys dismissed.
This has happened only a few weeks after a girl that was caught stealing a laptop in Lumumba was stripped, beaten, slapped on her boobs which they deemed un-attractive. Her honey pot also received slaps from whoever wanted as the boys accused her of not spending enough time doing the bush job .Shouting that no Lumumbist could ever be interested in a thief, she was put to service Gongom, Lumumba’s statue before police rescued her.
