The Makerere University Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe has vowed not to graduate any student from Makerere University Business School (MUBS) over a 2.64 billion debt in functional fees that MAK demands from MUBS.
MUBS, which is affiliated to Makerere University and specialises in business and management-related courses, is supposed to present its graduands at the 68th graduation ceremony set for January 2018 at the main Campus, Makerere.
The Makerere University Vice Chancellor, Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe, in a tweet of Friday 22nd December warned,
“We shall not graduate any MUBS student until MUBS management remits the portion of functional fees they owe us.”
The debt stands at 2.64 billion and is from the academic years 2012 – 2013 and 2016 – 2017.
Every Ugandan or East African student at MUBS is supposed to pay Shs 420,000 per year while an international student pays Shs1,027,500 which, according to Prof. Nawangwe, MUBS has been dodging.
Students of MUBS do not pay their tuition or functional fees directly to the Makerere account, but their principal is expected to remit part of the functional fees to Makerere.
Earlier in February this year, MAK Bursar Mr. Augustine Tamale instructed the administrative assistant in the office of the Academic Registrar, Mr Peter Kayonde, not to receive the graduation list from MUBS until they have cleared arrears of 4.6 billion and warned the MUBS principal to handle the matter with urgency in order to avoid inconveniences to the graduands.
MUBS students graduated on the 67th graduation and indicator that some amount was paid, leaving behind the now 2.64 billion.
If the situation remains the same, over 4,000 MUBS students may not graduate in January.
