In the 2017/2018 academic year, Kyambogo Uiversity reformed the system on how government sponsored students were being catered for, from giving them food to give them shillings 476,000 a semester which is approximately shillings 4,000 per day.
According to the university management this was done to reduce on the costs the university was incurring in providing food to students every day. This meant that this 4k was to cater for their breakfast, lunch and supper which according students is unrealistic.
Basing on the survey we carried out at Kyambogo University, a cheap plate of food with beans goes for shillings 3,000 while in other places it goes beyond shillings 6,000 which means that if a student is to depend on the amount provided to him/her by the government, they will be taking a single meal in a day.
Hon Ismail Birungi the Guild Representative Councillor (GRC) for Government Sponsored Students expressed his fellow students’ worries insisting that the money students receive cannot feed them for a full day since most of them come from humble backgrounds.
Currently, Kyambogo University feeds close to 2,800 government sponsored students and spends up to a tune of 1.33 Bn.
