As we seal off 2017 in style, we can never forget about the heart breaking moments that left campusers in tears following a number of unfortunate events that happened throughout 2017. As the saying goes what doesn’t kill you makes you stronger, campusers were able to move on from such moments despite the big damages left in their hearts. Here are some of those sad moments that left campusers completely broken.
1. KIU Students who perished in fatal road accident
A number of Kampala International University students were involved in a fatal road accident along Kampala – Gulu high way in Nakasongola, Kakooge town with four of them dying on-spot and three breathed their last enroute to Luweero. The students were coming from an association party in Buluri when the vehicle they were travelling in bumped into a taxi that was coming from Kampala on the Kampala-Gulu high way knocking them off the main road. KIU was closed for a day to allow its students mourn and bury their deceased colleagues.
2. Makerere University girl who jumped off Mitchell Hall over attempted rape
During the Easter holiday, a student of Makerere University fell off Mitchell hall’s third floor after being locked in a room and threatened to be raped. This student was identified as Brenda Nakyejju, a second year Bachelor of Music, Dance and Drama student. Brenda was residing in Cyber hostel, an incognito hostel opposite Nakiyingi Hostel in Makerere, Kikoni. While being rushed to hospital, Brenda told her pals that she jumped because she had been locked in the room and threatened with rape. This story left many campus girls in fear of meeting strangers.
3. When a speeding premio rammed into Banda hostel, crashed Kyambogo fresher’s legs
Earlier at the beginning of December, a female year one student only identified as Kevin, a resident of Tal hostel was moving from campus back to her hostel along the Banda-Naalya road when she got knocked down by a speeding premio which squashed her legs leaving her in a critical condition. The Toyota Premio that was in a high speed then swayed, running into a wall of a nearby hostel. Despite Kevin’s survival after this accident, her family, friends and Kyambogo leaders were left heartbroken as it is not yet clear whether she will be able to walk again.
- When a Makerere student vomited blood, died during examination
Another sad moment that rocked Makerere University was when one of its students identified as Nakalembe Joan, suddenly collapsed and died moments after her first end of semester paper. Nakalembe was a first year student of Education who also doubled as a resident of Garden Courts. According to an eye witness, Nakalembe asked for permission to get out during their Psychology course unit examination but never came back. It was discovered later that she was vomiting blood in the urinals before being rushed to the University hospital where she was moments later pronounced dead en route to Mulago referral hospital for further treatment.
- Kyambogo student knocked by Speeding Ipsum, head squashed
In the middle of 2017, a student of Kyambogo University identified as Obed Tumuhimbise was knocked dead by a speeding Ipsum at Kyandondo along the Lugogo bypass. Tumuhimbise whose stomach was deeply cut apart and the head squashed died on the spot. Tumuhimbise was a third-year student pursuing a bachelor’s degree in management science who got involved in an accident with his non-student friend as they were riding a motorbike. Tumuhimbise was left dead on spot and his colleague was rushed to Mulago hospital with a lot of injuries.
- When a body of Makerere student was found decomposing in staff quarters.
Michael Otira’s body was found lying lifeless in his room. Otira was a Makerere University Mechanical Engineering student and was last seen on Thursday, March 29. He was residing in one of the staff quarters on the western gate road stretch near Lumumba Hall. “A foul stench accumulated and flies started flying over his room. That’s when we realized something was wrong and we broke in,” an eyewitness narrated to Campus Bee earlier this year.

- When a popular Lumumba resident died mysteriously
Derrick Karahukayo was a final year student at Makerere University who passed on under very unclear circumstances. Derro, as he was commonly known at Makerere, was a common face in the university, a resident of Lumumba hall and hailed from the western Uganda district of Rukungiri. Initial reports suggested that he collapsed and died while going for a short call at his home in Rukungiri.
His death hit most of his friends at the university like a knockout blow as some of them refused to believe that Derro could leave that soon. Since then, Lumumba students have developed a norm of sparing few minutes of their time at every public event in Makerere to pay tribute to their fallen comrade.
