Uganda Christian University (UCU) might have just recorded the greatest number of applicants in her history of Law Pre-entry this year with over 800 students already interviewed for the Law course during the past 4 days of this week.
The interviews were scheduled to last 3 days from the 10th to 12th April where the students present themselves for a written test that is done in the morning before the orals conducted later in the day. The interviews, however, consumed an unexpected 4th day, with more numbers tested yesterday than any of the other days.
The previous years have had around 500 to 600 students applying for law at the university.
UCU has had a twist and has conducted its pre-entries even before Makerere University which is not consistent with past practice.
During a briefing on Tuesday this week, one applicant asked why this was the case. The Vice Chancellor, Dr. John Ssenyonyi seemed to suggest that the university was tired of being considered a second option.
Most students that did the interviews at the university usually applied after they had failed the same at Makerere. This drove UCU to hold hers first making it “first choice” of law for the applicants.
The numbers of students that are applying to do the pre-entry is simply overwhelming even for the admissions office.
Different notice boards at the administration block read “Law is Closed” seemingly shutting doors for students who might still harbour considerations for a placement at the private institution.
However, it is unclear whether indeed admissions for law have closed. By the end of the night yesterday, messages were being circulated on WhatsApp groups reading “UCU law school applications open till the end of the month…”. The authenticity of this has not yet been proved.
This, to some confirms looming speculations from the students that the university is still holding interviews, with some students considering May or June as the second phase for the pre-entry.
