A total of 9 students have been remanded to Luzira prison following their protest against East African Crude Oil Pipeline (EACOP) project.
The students were arrested by police on October 4. around Kingdom Kampala as they marched to petition the European Union (EU).
They argued in support of the EU parliamentary resolution that the EACOP project didn’t put into consideration of human rights.
The 9 students were arraigned before Buganda Road Court magistrate to answer to charges of being a common nuisance.
Magistrate Fidelice remanded the students to Luzira prison till October 10th when their case will be heard again.
The 9 are Lyazi Alex, Java Imuran, Wenani Gerald, Musiri David, Nkrunziza Alphonse, Kagubi Maktum, Akiso Benjamin, Akis Gonga and Nsamba Lubega.
The protest in which the 9 were arrested came only days after a group of secondary school students marched to petition EU against its position on EACOP.
Many Ugandan elites have described the arrest as a manifestation of double standards in handling protests.
