Africa Renewal University under its department of Journalism and Multimedia Communication is organizing Media Fest in memory of four fallen veteran Journalists. These are; Francis Bbale, Daniel Kyazze and Rosemary Nankabirwa who all died in 2015, and Nuliat Nambaziira who died in 2018. This is the second edition of Media Fest, the first took place last year.
Journalism students at the institution have been grouped in four families named after the fallen veteran Journalists to compete in different media and journalism categories. This is meant to enable the students to showcase and practice theoretical skills learnt in class.
As part of the Media Fest activities, the journalism students have so far organized a community outreach as cooperate social responsibility (CSR). They cleaned around Bulaga Kumwenda business Centre on Tuesday October 24, 2023. The event was graced by Hon Joyce Bagala, the Woman Member of Parliament for Mityana District as the chief Guest. She was flanked by Hon Betty Naluyima, the Woman Member of Parliament for Wakiso District.
The community engagement started with a short address of the University community by Chief Guest in the university chapel. This was followed by a street match by the students and guests with brass band from the University gate to Buloba town before the team moved to Bulaga Kumwenda for the cleaning exercise.
The university aniticipated that the event would provide an opportunity for the students to practice their public relations skills as they interact with the community around the Centre. Besides cleaning, some of them were tasked with specific roles such as taking photos, shooting video, giving out fliers about the university and marketing AFRU to the public.
The university also invited representatives of the fallen veteran journalists to join during the activity with aim of giving a chance for the students to interact with them. This was necessary because AFRU Journalism Department looks at these fallen journalists as good role models and heroes to students.
Climax of the Media Fest activities will be on November 07, 2023 at the University Chapel starting at 8AM. The journalism students will compete in Poem, Speech, Luganda & English News Reporting, Luganda & English News anchoring, News Editing & Production, Graphics Design, Photojournalism, Public Relations, Live News Reporting for both English and Luganda Languages and Live song performances.
Minister of ICT, Dr. Chris Baryomunsi will grace the event as the Guest of Honour. Also present will be the area Member of Parliament, Hon Medard Sseggona, Vice Chancellor Africa Renewal University and many other dignitaries.
