Last week was #MUKHealthWeek but very few people know that Friday was #AfrostoneHealthday a day when Africa and Livingstone, a hall of the ladies and that of the gents come out and offer free health services to students and community. This is more of giving back to community.
During the Afrostone health day, Reproductive Health Uganda an organization pushing sexual and reproductive health information and services forward was present at Africa hall providing breast and cervical cancer screening, a health talk on how to use emergency contraceptives, providing emergency contraceptives and condoms to students and lessons on how to use the female condom.
Whereas in Livingstone hall, there was free safe circumcision, blood donations and HIV/AIDs testing.
The number of girls who came for breast and cervical cancer screening was overwhelmingly a direct sign that girls have now started becoming responsible people who don’t wait for signs or symptoms because yes, prevention is better than cure.
“That condom is very large” said one girl as they were being taught on how to use a female condom efficiently. Dr. Linda from Reproductive Health Uganda reminded students that emergency contraceptives are only meant for emergencies and shouldn’t be used as family planning pills, she further encouraged girls to embrace the use of condoms as emergency contraceptives can’t prevent STDs.
