The Director of Criminal Investigations, AIGP Tom Magambo, has dismissed as false and misleading a WhatsApp message circulating on social media linking him to the ongoing family dispute involving businessman Professor Badru Kateregga and his wife.
Magambo said the message maliciously associates him with a matter that is strictly civil and outside the mandate of the Criminal Investigations Directorate (CID).
“As you may recall, the Police Public Relations Officer already updated the country on this family conflict and advised that it be handled as a civil matter. As CID, we have no powers to intervene,” Magambo said.
He emphasized that neither he nor the CID has taken sides or issued any directives regarding the dispute, urging the public to disregard unverified information that could cause confusion or unnecessary tension.
“For the record, I have never met Prof Kateregga or his wife personally. Any suggestion that we know each other should be rejected with the contempt it deserves,” Magambo said, calling on the public to focus on national development instead of spreading falsehoods.
The CID boss further warned that individuals who create or circulate false information risk legal action under laws governing the misuse of electronic communication.
The police have repeatedly cautioned the public against sharing unverified messages, noting that misinformation can inflame disputes and undermine public trust.
