In a letter dated 24th May 2021, the new Makerere University Guild President, Ivan Ssempijja asked the university Vice Chancellor Prof. Barnabas Nawangwe to give students a grace period of 7 days to sit for their end of semester exams as parents work around the clock to clear the remaining tuition balance.

In the same letter, Ssempijja further requested the university administration to allow students who paid 60% of their tuition to fully sit for their exams and clear the balance in the next semester.

“We request also that students who have cleared 60% of their tuition are allowed to fully sit for their exams and start by paying the balance in the coming academic semester.” Part of Ssempijja’s letter reads.

According to Ssempijja, thousands of financially struggling students have reached out to him through GRCs as they expressed  fears of missing their exams over tuition balance. Ssempijja believes that the administration’s intervention will save time that would be lost if students have to repeat the entire semester if they are not allowed to do their exams.
